Treatment

Children

The Canadian association of dentists recommends that children have a first orthodontic evaluation as early as 7 years old. Though treatment may not start this early, it is important to plan the appropriate timing of an intervention if or when it is required. If you or your dentist has any concerns about spacing, crooked teeth, protruding teeth, habits (such as thumb or finger sucking or mouth breathing or tongue thrusting), problems with the eruption of the adult teeth, malaligned jaws, overbite or underbite, schedule an initial consultation with us today!

First phase or early treatment during childhood can result in faster and more comfortable tooth alignment, a reduced risk of trauma or damage to the teeth, the establishment of equilibrium for more symmetric and normal growth and development, and may eliminate the need for a second phase of orthodontic treatment in adolescence when the permanent teeth have erupted.

Children Ortho NDG
Teenagers Ortho NDG

Teenagers

This is the most common age for orthodontic treatment as this is when esthetics of the smile begin to play a greater role in self-confidence. It is also during this time that problems with the bite are discovered as the permanent teeth have just about finished developing. It is a great time to initiate orthodontic treatment because teeth still move with ease. In many cases, orthodontic treatment undertaken in adolescence can also help avoid the need for future jaw surgery.

We offer traditional metal braces, “clear” ceramic braces, Invisalign, and other appliances needed to achieve the perfect smile. Come see us to find out what the best choice is for you!

Adults

It is not too late for orthodontic treatment at any age!

Whether you have relapse from previous treatment or you would like to have orthodontic treatment for the first time, come see us and we will determine the best treatment to help you achieve a beautiful and healthy smile.

If you are inquiring regarding esthetics, to correct your bite, or to make room before replacing some teeth, determine with the orthodontist what treatment is best suited for your needs by scheduling an initial consultation today.

Do you find that you show too much of your gums when you are smiling or laughing?

We call this a “gummy smile”.

Though this is mostly an aesthetic concern, if you have difficulty closing your lips over your teeth, causing the gums to become dry or red, it’s a health concern as well. In either case, if you are self-conscious about this, there are solutions available!

You may have previously consulted an orthodontist, dentist, or surgeon and were told that a surgical procedure to move the jaw would be necessary to correct the gummy smile.  However, over the years, technological advances in the orthodontic field have led to a treatment that can achieve gummy smile correction without any surgery of the jaw. Furthermore, as this correction is integrated into the orthodontic treatment, it can be achieved almost completely painlessly with a minimally invasive procedure, performed right here in office.

Build your confidence with this treatment that produces impressive results that will keep you smiling proudly!

FAQ's

What is the best age to visit an orthodontist?

The best age is at any age!  Typically, the earlier the orthodontic evaluation is done, the better, but in general, it is recommended to have an orthodontic consultation by the age of 7 (as advised by the Canadian Association of Orthodontists).

This does not mean that orthodontic treatment will necessarily be initiated at this time, but it is advantageous for early interventions which can be more efficiently timed out to enhance final results of treatment.  Children, adolescents and adults each make up about one third of patients undergoing treatment.

How long does an orthodontic treatment last? Is it at least 2 years?

An orthodontic treatment can last from anywhere ranging from just a few months for mild treatments to a few years for more complex treatments. On average, a full treatment lasts between 12 to 24 months.  An individual will require a full assessment with an orthodontist to determine their personalized estimated treatment time.

My teeth (or my child’s teeth) look straight, so why is our dentist recommending that I (or my child) see an orthodontist?

Though one part of orthodontics is good dental alignment, having “straight teeth” does not necessarily guarantee good dental health, good stability of the bite, or optimal dental aesthetics.
A dentist evaluates the health of the bite in addition to the health of the teeth.   They may see that your bite is not right or notice signs of advanced dental wear, which may indicate that your teeth are more likely to shift, or this may cause more complex issues for your teeth, gums or jaws over time.
The dentist may also refer you to an orthodontist if they deem orthodontic treatment to be beneficial prior to certain dental treatments, which ultimately comes down to if they think it will help you a attain a more beautiful smile and healthy bite that lasts a lifetime.

Help! I have an orthodontic EMERGENCY! One of my appliances is off or something is poking me and it hurts! What can I do?

Firstly, if you are concerned about a dental infection, rather than an orthodontic problem, see your dentist as soon as you can to treat or contain the infection.  Sometimes this can also be due to a gum abscess which is due to something stuck in the gums which we or your dentist can assist with if you are unable to dislodge what is stuck in the gums.·

If this occurs outside of business hours, please send us an email at INFO@ORTHO-NDG.COM and we will respond to you as soon as possible. Send us a photograph of the region if you can. In the meantime, please consult the following suggestions:

POKEY WIRE (or a wire that came out of the brace):

1. Use a nail clipper to cut the wire where you have access.                                 2. Use dental wax (or a piece of chewing gum if no wax is available) to cover the brace or spot that feels sharp or is sticking out (make sure to use a big piece, and that the site is as dry as possible before applying it – N.B. wax will need to be removed when eating)       3. Rinse with warm salt water. An injury in the mouth will heal more quickly if the site is kept clean.
4. If you are concerned about redness or swelling: since the site has already become irritated, once the irritating factor is removed, the swelling will take a day or two to go down.

UNGLUED BRACKET:

1. Try removing the bracket or moving the bracket to a spot where it doesn’t rub too much on the lip or the cheek (or use dental wax).
2. Book an appointment to have it repaired.  Though this is not urgent in most cases, it’s best to contact us to know if your next appointment should be bumped up to an earlier date.

UNGLUED ATTACHMENT OR BUTTON USED FOR ELASTIC WEAR:

1. Stop wearing all your elastics for now.
2. If you have aligners, keep wearing them. If you find that it feels looser than usual, contact us to let us know so we may assist with bumping up your next appointment to an earlier date.
